Playoff scenarios narrowing

Boise, ID (3/28/13) – The list of possible candidates to face the Idaho Steelheads in the first round of the 2013 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs, presented by KeyBank, has shrunk to two teams – either the Colorado Eagles or the Utah Grizzlies.

Idaho has secured the no. 3 seed in the playoffs and will face the no. 6 seed in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. No matter who the opponent is, the series will open on Wednesday, April 3, at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.

Utah’s victory over Colorado Wednesday night served two purposes – (1) it ensured Idaho cannot face the Las Vegas Wranglers in the first round of the postseason, and (2) it got Utah to within three points in the standings of Colorado with two games left to play in the regular season. Utah and Colorado play each other Friday and Saturday night in Utah.

If Colorado wins either game, the Eagles clinch the 6-seed. If the two teams wind up tied in the standings, Colorado has the tie-breaker and would be the no. 6 seed. If Utah wins both games in regulation, the Grizzlies would finish one point ahead of Colorado in the standings to secure the no. 6 seed.

The series, no matter the opponent, is a best-of-seven with Game 1 and 2 being played in Boise on April 3 and April 4. Games 6 and 7 will be played on an “if necessary” basis at CenturyLink Arena. The dates for those games will be released once an opponent is determined.
